Hotel Foyer
Hugo stands fidgeting with a small collection of coins in the Hotel foyer. After a few moments a decision is made, he picks up the phone, drops a coin in the slot and dials. Eventually, it is answered by a vague, irritable voice, possably drunk.
The voice is definitely Wyndham. Hugo crosses his fingers and preys to noone that he will not be recognised. After a short pause he speaks: 'I'm trying to contact a Thomas Wyndham.. ' ... Hugo listens carefully to the pause, the response, and the subsequent click of the phone being hung up.
So Hugo Montag is drinking in a hotel bar, and will have to stay another evening in this godforsaken town that Wyndham calls home. Feeling lonely, irritated by his surroundings, he picks up his notebook and writes:
"Predator coatstand, three legged, tentacled head, collects black coats - hanging them, while their owners talk about their tax, journeys, each others 'projects', their health (or lack of it), their clients, their money, their cars, their 'travelling'."
Shortly, Hugo makes friends with a big fat intelligent open minded american businessman, which restores his oppinion of people in general, by contradicting almost all of his preconceptions about the man.
Later, in his hotel room, an idea about the form and shape of the symbols repeated in the wallpaper is not expressable in words. Hugo decides that he will buy a camera tomorrow.
And tomorrow, on the cold streets of that godforsaken town, Hugo will find a very old secondhand camera which meets his requirements entirely.
