The Cathedral
The Cathedral, more than 144 meters tall, dominates the skyline of the city. In 1831, nine years after construction started on the Gothic cathedral, John Adargas took over as official architect and made the project a personal obsession. When Adargas died early this century, the cathedral was left unfinished, and it has yet to be decided whether or not to attempt its completion.
That the cathedral was built around existing structures is most obvious from the interior, externally, however the Cathedral is supported by a number of buttresses in the form of gigantic spindly legs, like those of insects. Visually at least, the Cathedral does not seem to require any additional support at this point, though plaster models, since destroyed, are said to have indicated that the upward curve of the tower would have required them. These organic forms, typical of Adargas's style, stretch out into the surrounding plazas and streets (and in one case, forming a bridge over a nearby canal).
Adargas stated that the Cathedral could never be completed, since the mathematical system he was using to plan the building could be worked on forever, and that he would pass his secrets, and his formula onto an apprentice. Although there are architects and mathematicians (including the famous artist/anarchist Professor Moriarty, who has made his own very unique study of the building.) who state that they have found a formula which roughly describes the curve of the spiral and the general shape of the cathedral, we will never be know for certain what secrets and formula Adargas would have passed on, he died before selecting anyone to continue his masterpiece.
